Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Registered Nurse position. The Registered Nurse is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $75,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Under the general direction of the Director of Health Services, and in collaboration with other Health Care providers, the Registered Nurse is responsible for the triage, assessment and care of illness, injury and general health concerns of students and visitors, following the guidelines set by the College's Health Services. The Registered Nurse provides initial assessment and treatment utilizing established clinical guidelines, determines the severity of the patient's health problems or concerns, provides education to the patient and refers patients requiring further evaluation and definitive care to the physician(s) and/or advanced practitioner. The Registered Nurse performs immunizations, phlebotomy, intravenous fluids, and other medication injections. In addition to clinical duties, the Registered Nurse supports the Director of Health Services in Emergency Preparedness and Public Health planning. The Registered Nurse provides health education for the campus from within the Health Center and in conjunction with campus partners, including events outside of the Health Center. The position functions independently within the broad scope of the College's policies and guidelines and refers exceptions to the Director of Health Services.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Clinical Patient Care

  • Evaluates, assesses, plans, and implements nursing care according to the needs of each patient, based on appropriate standards of practice and as ordered by the physician or advanced practitioner. This includes triage of patients on the phone and in person and scheduling as needed as well as following up on nurse triage service calls
  • Follows nursing protocols under guidance of the physician or advanced practitioner. Based on these protocols, independently assesses students with the following - urinary tract infections, sore throat or conjunctivitis
  • Provides direct nursing care, treatment and medications to patients with medical and nursing needs, including:
  • Measure full vital signs and obtain patient medical, family and medication history
  • Administer Immunizations
  • Perform Tuberculosis screening - including PPD placements and reads
  • Provide wound care
  • Administer intravenous fluid administration
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Provide injection medication treatment and teaching
  • In-office nurse observation monitoring
  • Commensurate with their level of training and experience and the needs of the department, clinical duties could also include:
  • Screening and counseling for sexually transmitted infections
  • Travel and study abroad consultations and immunizations as indicated - including reviewing travel questionnaires
  • Allergy injections
  • Birth control consults and reproductive health guidance
  • Reviews relevant patient data and keeps necessary documentation, including patient assessments, care, progress notes and any other required charting to maintain complete and accurate medical records.
  • Communicates with students via email and patient portal
  • Provides coverage for Certified Medical Assistants rooming patients and providing follow-up testing or immunizations as ordered by the treating provider
  • Follows universal precautions when exposed to blood and bodily fluids

Administrative

  • Participates in Health Services' immunization stocking, procedures, implementation, and tracking - including immunization surveys. This includes questions from students and families pertaining to immunizations
  • Supports the Director of Health Services in campus Emergency Preparedness and Public Health planning and management
  • Participates in Emergency Preparedness collaboration with 5-Colleges
  • Contributes to Health Center education - updating website, creating and maintaining educational pamphlets
  • Collaborates with campus partners to provide student education and training
  • Participates in organizing and staffing campus events
  • Participates in running data reports from Electronic Health Record for tracking and producing reports

Qualifications:

Required

  • Graduate of an accredited BS degree nursing education program
  • Current Registered Nurse license to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Certified in basic CPR
  • 2 years of Registered Nurse experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical facility
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, leadership, time management, and organizational skills
  • Proficient in MS Office, Google Sheets and documents, and use of Electronic Health Record
  • Experience working with a diverse community
  • Pre-employment Physical/Lift Test

Preferred

  • Experience in Women's Health and Reproductive Health Care
