Job Description

Job Summary

This position works 40 hours per week.

The position allocated to this class is responsible for performing skilled investigative tasks under the general direction of a designated supervisor. This classification differs from investigative classifications of the County Sheriff's Department by its lack of, or limited use and applications of, criminal law, County codes, firearms or power of arrest.

TOTAL COMPENSATION:$60,283 - $84,435 annually.Total compensation is anestimatebased upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Examples of Duties

* Identifies, locates, and tracks witnesses, victims, and respondents/defendants for service and court appearance, including conducting surveillance to locate and develop information material to the case; researches and locates property/assets/employment of respondents/defendants.

* Interviews witnesses and victims of crime, including law enforcement officers and any others determined to possess information beneficial to the case; takes statements and conducts interviews either in the field or in the office, and creates related reports.

* Inspects, evaluates, and reworks crime scenes, including measuring, sketching, and photographing the crime scene.

* Writes and submits thorough and accurate reports and supplemental reports that are acceptable in court as evidence.

* Works closely with the attorney assigned to the case in preparation for trial which includes maintaining necessary files; reading, reviewing, and analyzing pertinent police reports for investigative sufficiency; assisting the attorney in reviewing the case; and providing detailed information relative to the investigation in a thorough and professional manner.

* May prepare demonstrative evidence for courtroom presentations; may provide transportation for witnesses; may provide courtroom testimony as needed.

* Utilizes available computer databases to search for information and potential leads helpful in locating individuals pertinent to the case, including researching and locating expert witnesses.

* Ascertains, locates and obtains necessary documents related to the crime.

* Processes service, including serving subpoenas to individuals and other entities such as businesses, health care providers, government agencies, and other organizations.

* Establishes and maintains rapport with those elements within society which possess information beneficial to the work of the department and positions.

* Establishes and maintains equitable working relationships with agencies, groups, and individuals, both public and private, including varied social service and education agencies; coordinates particular efforts of the department with these entities.

* Develops criminal and/or civil intelligence; prepares material witness warrants as requested by attorney; conducts mitigation/sentencing investigations and prepares written reports; and recognizes the need to collect additional evidence and does so, as necessary.

* Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Minimum Requirements

* Associate's degree from an accredited college or university degree in criminal justice or related field, and

* Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement and/or working in an investigative capacity which displays an ability to successfully perform this work.

* An equal combination of related education and/or experience may be considered.

* Possession of a valid Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment, and evidence of a safe driving record is required. A privately owned and reliable vehicle may be required.

Selection Factors

* Knowledge of the criminal justice system and investigative practices and procedures.

* Knowledge of applicable criminal law, including the Revised Code of Washington (RCW).

* Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

* Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

* Skilled in the use of computers and software related to the performance of the job.

* Ability to write thorough and accurate reports.

* Ability to maintain composure during tense, emotional, or other confrontational situations.

* Ability to work unusual hours including weekends and holidays as needed to complete cases.

* Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to information gathered during investigations.
